Translation of Shri Mahayogi’s words during a satsangha in New York
August 7, 2010
A disciple who usually speaks boldly and directly, asks a question addressing the lackadaisical state of practitioners, which leads to stagnation in the spiritual path.
Disciple: It seems to me that the most difficult obstacle is admitting to yourself that we don’t really want the Truth, unless it will adapt itself to us.
Year after year we continue to struggle to practice every day, to follow all the teachings of the Truth. And really, if we examine not only our own spiritual practice, but even our attitudes towards everything in the world, we always want the world to follow us. And I believe that this truly is the biggest obstacle of all.
We want to be told that we are being spiritual, and we want to think of ourselves as spiritual but we don’t actually want to be spiritual. And as you told us over and over, the answer to this problem is just practice harder, and to keep trying to make ourselves deeper, removing individuality. What we all want to know over and over is: Is there anything else we can do?
Master: It is true that the words “spiritual” or “spirituality” seem to have become a culture business also. Well, it is just a general interest. (Intensely) The point is, as an individual how do you feel about it, and then how do you want to live? You must ask yourself. Isn’t it true freedom you want? Isn’t it true happiness you seek? Even though you have been taught that Existence—that is, the True Reality—exists within you, why won’t you try to seek it? You must seriously ask yourself this simple question [and inquire into it]! Other thoughts are all merely the effect of information. You do not want to lose yourself by being caught up in the effects of its whirlpool. You live your entire life by yourself. This means that all the responsibility for your life is yours! Nobody can live your life for you. Whether you improve your self or worsen your life is up to you. Whether you attain Satori or die in ignorance is also up to you. It is the issue of none other than your self! Whether the world changes or how much an age may change, nothing matters. That which is eternal is the only thing worth seeking. It is not for anyone else! You seek it because it is the True Existence. Ask yourself that. Surely, you must feel the thirst for it within you. Then you will no longer be caught up in the world. The mind, at last, becomes quiescent.
