Renunciation of Ignorance

Translation of Shri Mahayogi’s words during a satsangha in New York
August 21, 2010

Q: Is it ever important to ask why ignorance could come and convince us that it exists?

Master: Necessary. It is because the mind attempts to see only the external through the sensory organs. And also, there is ahankara, one of the pillars which composes the mind. Ahankara is the ego-consciousness, which separates one from the others. This concept is necessary in the world. However, that is where mistake enters in and puts an egotistical cover [over the Truth]. Furthermore, this ego identifies itself with the True Self and hides the True Self (smiling). That is the big cause of ignorance. You see, there is a consciousness that knows the mind, even now. You can recognize that the mind is witnessing, right?…the mind is knowing, right?…by pure consciousness which is deeper within. Whatever the mind thinks, feels or how the mind moves, immovable consciousness is witnessing it and knowing it. That is the important point. Through discrimination, you need to clearly distinguish between ego, or the mind, and the True Self or the Pure Consciousness. The mind gets attached to the various stimuli that the world throws on it. Then you must discern them, and renounce them as ignorance. So then, ignorance disappears.
