Translation of an excerpt from a satsangha in Kyoto January 29, 2011
Q: Please teach me what I need to be careful about in the practice of karma yoga.
Master: Karma yoga is Yoga of work or action. This is the Yoga in which actions are dedicated to the service of others. It is practiced without ego or kleshas*, or striving to serve others through actions that eliminate the ego or kleshas. If you forget about True Self or God, then there is a danger of getting into conceit.
Q: So then, we need to act with a clear purpose.
Master: Yes. It is important to deepen your awareness of Atman in others, or God, or Oneness in all creation. You must not forget that.
Q: In that regard, we should practice bhakti yoga, jnana yoga and other simultaneously.
Master: Yes, that is so. They do not contradict each other, and rather they will cultivate well-balanced understanding and lead you toward realization of Truth. So it is essential to practice all together.
*Kleshas is the fundamental cause of all desires, karma and suffering.
